Tidepools Cover Concepts

My conceptual cover designs for MiraCosta’s annual journal Tidepools—a publication of student submitted art and writing designed and published by a team of students—are two very different tonal approaches to the year’s theme “The Body: Gender Identity, Longing, Searching” given by our editor-in-chief.

Cover A provides an individualistic, reflective, and ethereal mood. The greens, oranges, and browns of the cover bring an earthy and warm tone that offers the viewer comfort and light in contrast to the bittersweet mood of the abstracted subject.

Cover B emphasizes community and belonging—an interpretation of the theme of family presented in the mood board below—in a joyful, Kieth-Harring-inspired explosion of bright colors and playful line art.

When presented to the editor-in-chief, Cover A came close to being chosen for the 2024 cover, but was beat out by a class vote. I am still honored for my cover to have made it that far and be praised so highly by the client.
