Tidepools Layouts and Social Media
For MiraCosta College’s annual journal of student art and writing, Tidepools, I designed layouts for four of the poetry submissions as well as the Instagram post advertising the poetry section of the book. I worked within a large team that was creating the entire book and we went through countless revisions and rounds of feedback for each other and from the editor-in-chief to get to our final product. My layouts went through many typographic changes to work with the range of lengths and formats that the poems exhibited while also maintaining strong consistency.
The interior of the book had to be based off of the cover (designed by Arya Gaspeed) chosen by the editor-in-chief, so I incorporated the sharp angled freeform shapes, circle elements, and the occasional stylized anatomical piece. The linocut print elements were assets made for the team by Jena Diliberto to include more textures and depth in the designs where the anatomical pieces were not fitting or took too much attention. The typefaces used were all voted on by the team.

An earlier draft layout. Hanging indents and highlighted text had to be removed in favor of sticking with the poet’s original formatting
The Instagram post, which will be part of the social media campaign for the book prior to its release in Fall 2024 on the account tidepoolspublishing, highlights select quotes from the book to give people a sneak peek. I went for a “seamless” carousel post design where three pictures combine to create one long connected graphic, which encourages the audience to scroll through the whole post to get the full view.
