Alan Wake Digital Collage
This digital collage class project, inspired by Remedy Entertainments video game series Alan Wake, incorporates both digital and physical elements to create a mixed-media look. All words, except “illuminated”, were handwritten by me on paper that I tore up and scanned in to add to the textural collage look and feel. I was also able to use a scanned analog film photograph of a light fixture for the shadowed figure’s eye, courtesy of snaershots. All other elements are stock photos heavily edited to make them appear as cutouts of various material.
Finding the best way to utilize the quote was my biggest hurdle in creating the first draft. The curved type at the top did not visually flow to the rest of the words at the bottom the way it should, which necessitated the changes made in the final piece.
My earliest sketch concept (top) centers the light fixture photo much more prominently, as I was offered a copy of the original scan before deciding on the direction I wanted to take for this project. Alan Wake became the central inspiration because of the story’s theme of light vs dark, making the photograph a perfect element.
